August Gymnast of the Month

Clair

Clair has had to overcome a lot of tough luck in the past year.  A lot of less tough girls might have given up and stopped trying, but not Clair.

When she first arrived at Hershey Gymnastic Center she impressed the coaches and quickly moved up from Level 3 to Level 4.  Hershey’s Level 4 team last year was a killer bunch of girls and literally blew out the competition at most meets.  Clair was psyched and ready to go with the team to the State competition (where they ultimately rolled over everyone!), but unfortunately Clair wasn’t with the team, but fighting for her life against a serious case of pneumonia.  Thankfully for her, she won her battle too.

After recovering from the pneumonia, Clair once again was doing great.  At a birthday party for one of her teammates, they were playing a game of “electric fence” (sort of a reverse limbo where the winner is the one who can jump over an invisible “fence”).  Clair realized that a forward dive and roll would put her way ahead of the competition, so she ran to the “fence”, leaped head first over it, stuck out her arms….and watched one of them crumple and make a nasty “crack” sound.  She won the “electric fence” game but got a broken arm in the process.  Once again, Clair worked hard and in a few weeks was competing.  This is one tough lady!!

Clair is looking forward to moving upward to Levels 6 and especially Level 7.  “I really want to be able to participate in making up my own floor routine”.  She doesn’t have a favorite event, but admits that right now the beam is her “least favorite”.

Clair has a wonderful bun of pets – “Cosmo” – a female Golden Retriever-Black Lab mix, “Bugs Bunny” – a Parakeet, and some little bitty fish.  “They move too fast to try and name them”.

Clair hasn’t zeroed in on a career, but says she makes very good grades and enjoys all of her classes.  Where a lot of kids might be tempted to try the old “the dog ate my homework” trick once in a while, Clair doesn’t dare try it.  Her father is a High School Teacher and has heard every excuse around.

Clair’s favorite food is CRAB.  “We go to my relative’s summer home in Maryland and one night we get a big pot, lots of Old Bay Seasoning, about 30 pounds of crabs, and I’m in heaven”.

Everyone say hello to our August Gymnast of the Month - Clair.
